DJ Rubi’s artistry is rising - and she is just getting started.  Origin, Influences & The Experience DJ Rubi’s dive into the drum and bass scene began in high school, where her love for electronic music took a turn. The moment she heard her first drum and bass track, it was a sound unlike anything she’d ever encountered. “The fast-paced beats, the deep basslines, and the genre’s energy just resonated with me on a whole new level,” Heather says. “ Chase & Status , High Contrast , Hybrid Minds , Shy Fx , Hedex , Wilkinson , Netsky , Kanine , and King of Rollers were some of my early musical influences. I learned a lot from watching seasoned DJs perform. Their mixing skills, track selection, and how they read the crowd taught me the importance of creating a journey with my sets.”  DJ Rubi quickly honed her preferences, gravitating towards sub-genres that spoke to her-liquid drum and bass for its melody, Neurofunk, and intricate, aggressive beats. Experimenting with sounds and techniques in her mixes allowed her to sharpen and define her unique style.  “I focused on blending smooth transitions with unexpected drops, creating a dynamic and immersive experience for the listeners, “ Heather explains. “Over time, I found a balance between technical precision and emotional expression, which became the hallmark of my signature style in drum and bass.” DJ Rubi’s sets are renowned for their high-energy mixing, designed to take the crowd on an engaging journey from start to finish. Her approach blends thoughtful track selection, tension-building, dynamic flow, and a personal touch of emotional connection to create an unforgettable experience.  “I start by choosing tracks that have a strong energy and complement each other well,” Heather explains. I look for tracks with powerful basslines, catchy melodies, and dynamic drops. These tracks set the mood and gradually increase the energy. I use longer transitions and layering to create a seamless flow between songs. Music is a powerful emotional tool, and I strive to create moments in my set that evoke strong emotions. Whether it's a euphoric build-up, a nostalgic melody, or an unexpected drop, these moments help forge a deeper connection with the audience. I achieve this through unique mashups and live remixing. I mix tracks with different tempos and intensities to create peaks and valleys, ensuring the crowd stays engaged without feeling overwhelmed. It’s about infusing my personality and style into the performance, making each set unique and memorable.” For DJ Rubi, creating an immersive experience involves engaging the senses and emotions. She crafts a journey that captivates from start to finish by focusing on atmosphere, storytelling, crowd interaction, energy flow, and a deep personal connection with the audience.  “These elements play a huge role in setting the mood and enhancing the overall experience,” Heather says. “I like to tell a story through my set. I carefully select tracks that flow together and create a narrative. Each track should feel like a chapter, building towards a climax and resolving. I also consider the venue’s atmosphere, lighting, visuals, and sound quality. Engaging with the crowd is crucial. Sharing my passion and story about how I first got involved in the EDM scene and what drew me to the drum and bass genre helps create a deeper connection with the audience.” DJ Rubi’s Impact on the Texas EDM Scene DJ Rubi has performed in various settings, from intimate bars to large-scale festivals. Standout shows include venues like Bodega  and The Green Elephant , and her residency at Arlington’s Dirty Mule Bar . Recently, she took part in Not Alone  at The Green Elephant, a non-profit event by Simbolizm  and AFSP , with proceeds supporting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Whether at a small venue or a major festival, DJ Rubi seamlessly adapts her sets and maintains her signature sound by reading the vibe and energy of each space.  “This show was a reminder to let everyone know you are loved and that you matter,” Heather says. “There were resources available to help anyone in need. It was a beautiful experience to express my emotions through music and take the listeners on a journey with me.” DJ Rubi’s presence in the DFW EDM scene has skyrocketed, earning her a solid reputation within the community. With DJ Ferno at the helm, they embody a mission rooted in love and authenticity, paving the way for a vibrant community that resonates well beyond Austin’s borders.  The Birth & Community Building of Baraza Musiq Baraza Musiq was born from DJ Ferno’s childhood experiences at school assemblies, where communities gathered to learn and share. This concept evolved into assembly events he organized in Philadelphia and New York. After moving to Austin, DJ Ferno gradually reconnected with his Mother’s early teachings to shape the mission of Baraza Musiq. “We gather around music - spelled with a ‘Q’ as a nod to Philadelphia like Musiq Soulchild!” DJ Ferno claims. “That’s how Baraza, which means ‘gathering’ in Swahili, came to be. It’s all about using music to bring people together.”   Baraza Musiq fosters unity among diverse cultural influences in Austin, celebrating a variety of origins - from Latin and African influences to Southeast Asian traditions. The Anniversary Party last Friday, featuring Kunal Merchant from Indo Warehouse at The Courtyard ATX , exemplified Baraza Musiq’s commitment to unity and cultural celebration.   “It’s about bringing the core of our diverse cultures together in a melting pot and showcasing it through house music,” DJ Ferno says. “This creates a unique vibe for Austin and globally!” Spotlight on DJ Ferno DJ Ferno’s journey in the music industry is remarkable, as he’s established himself as a key figure in Austin’s EDM scene. He began DJing at 16, receiving turntables for his birthday, and playing at parties and events, eventually connecting with Dayne Jordan. While DJing and producing with Dayne, they sold out shows in Philadelphia, where he toured with Lupe Fiasco , catching the eye of DJ Jazzy Jeff . Ferno spent seven years with Jeff’s Vinyl Destination crew, honing his skills across various music genres. A pivotal moment in his career came when he witnessed Kenny Dope and Terry Hunter perform at the Chosen Few Picnic in Chicago, where 50,000 people were rocking to house music. “That sparked something in me, and it set me on this path,” DJ Ferno says. “During a tour stop in Austin, I visited places like the old Kingdom and experienced rave culture for the first time. Even though I moved here in 2020, I’ve been coming to Austin since 2015.” DJ Ferno’s sets radiate a distinct energy that captivates audiences in Austin and beyond. It all began with the intention of playing music rooted in love. Kunal Merchant was also an exciting addition, especially as a global artist, playing a crucial role in DJ Ferno’s music discovery journey.  “This extends to the design of the artwork and other elements, allowing us to communicate love and community,” DJ Ferno says. “Once you arrive, it’s all about the decor, the energy, the music, the lighting, etc. all contributing to the experience! Kunal is a key part of discovering the music I love. When I lived in New York, he was one of my closest friends,” DJ Ferno says. “We would see Dixon  at the Brooklyn Mirage  and catch Black Coffee on Halloween. His influence has significantly shaped what Baraza represents. From overcoming COVID-19 pandemic challenges to bringing world-class talent to Texas, NRG Music Events has quickly made its mark on the DFW electronic dance music scene. Founded by Raul Sarmiento in 2022, NRG emerged when live music was coming back, seizing the opportunity to curate top-tier trance and techno events. We sat down with Raul to learn more about the story behind NRG, its dual brands - TRANCEPORTAL and INTELLECT - and how their commitment to world-class production has redefined the Texas EDM community.  EDM Texas: You moved to Dallas from Los Angeles in 2019 to pursue your corporate career, but soon after, you founded NRG Music Events! Can you tell us how that transition from the corporate world sparked your passion for curating music events? Raul: I transitioned into a corporate job seven years ago to support my family after the birth of my first child. Before that, I worked at startups like RaveReady.com  and Clubstyle, where I manufactured clubwear. The transition was easy for me because I always had a passion for hosting events and had previous experience.  EDM Texas: What gaps did you notice in the DFW electronic music community, and how did that influence your vision for curating talent that resonates with the fans here? Raul: I needed help finding trance and techno shows I wanted to attend. The city leans heavily towards bass and house, which is excellent for those who enjoy it, but it wasn’t my vibe.  EDM Texas: In 2022, despite the pandemic's challenges, you, Ryan Mcleod, and your sister, Erika, turned your vision into reality with the founding of NRG Music Events! Can you walk us through that pivotal year and how the collaboration with Ryan and Erika shaped the brand’s early success? Raul: The first two events were just Ryan and I, as we threw a couple of underground warehouse parties with Triceratops and Arctic Moon. We started gaining real traction, and my sister saw the potential, quickly stepping in to help bring our vision to life. Our third event, featuring Billie Gillies , put us on the map in DFW. We sold out the Ridglea Room  in Fort Worth; the rest is history from there!  EDM Texas: One of the standout elements of NRG Music Events is your TRANCEPORTAL brand, which has brought global trance legends like Bryan Kearney, Simon Patterson, and John Askew to Texas! What inspired you to focus on trance, and how did you secure such renowned artists for your events?  Raul: Trance music is my passion! It’s such a unique genre that connects people worldwide in a way no other genre can. I’ve even traveled to Europe to attend specific trance festivals. I’ve also been DJing in the scene since 2008. During that time, I had the privilege of meeting and performing alongside many of my favorite artists. In Trance, We Trust!  EDM Texas: In addition to TRANCEPORTAL, you also launched INTELLECT, a subdivision focused on techno that caters to a different audience. What motivated you to branch into techno? Raul: I’m excited about our INTELLECT project and bringing this to the DFW scene. Right now, the brand features a lot of neo-rave and hard techno, but I’m working to get proper underground techno into the mix soon. Bring back the roots of the underground rave scene!  EDM Texas: How do you balance these two worlds while keeping both audiences engaged? What strategies do you use to ensure each event feels unique yet part of the more prominent NRG brand? Raul: It’s not easy, but we’ve gained incredible support for both brands. What’s fascinating is seeing how, while each crowd may be a small sample of supporters, they are entirely different. I aim to represent both brands and throw an event, each with their own stage. That’s something I’m excited to bring to life! EDM Texas: NRG Music Events is known for its exceptional production quality, thanks to partnerships with companies like Dream Beam Lasers and Daisy One World! How do these collaborations enhance the overall attendee experience, and what role does high-quality production play in creating memorable events? Raul: Dream Beam Lasers have been with us since Day One, and we take great pride in the unique production value we bring to each event. No two events are ever the same, thanks to the creative team of Peter and Jacob, who can transform the same venue into entirely new experiences every time. Daisy One World joined our events when I discovered my friend Brialice was the company’s President. I’ve always believed in adding extra production to our events, stunning visuals or on-stage performances, and her team has delivered! It’s been a pleasure collaborating with them.  EDM Texas: How does your commitment to high production quality differentiate NRG from other promoters in the Texas music scene, and what impact does this level of detail have on the overall event experience?  Raul: I research shows here and in LA, watching the latest productions and creative ideas. Recently, we introduced our 360-degree stages, with incredible strobe lighting, to create a more intimate and intense experience. You have to be there! EDM Texas: What are your and your team’s plans for expanding NRG Music Events’ reach and growing your fanbase in the future? Are there any upcoming plans or teasers for future shows?  Raul: This life isn’t easy. It’s a constant grind, taking wins and losses, like any other business. But our passion for what we do keeps us going, and we’re fully committed to pushing the boundaries of our scene. We’re gearing up to bring our city new and unique experiences. This past weekend, the Dallas electronic music community soared to new heights with SILO’s grand opening, a venue set to reshape the local landscape, and with enthusiastic fans and top-tier artists in attendance, the inaugural weekend proved that SILO has not come to play.  The Venue & Opening Weekend SILO Dallas, once a 1959 grain silo for the Johnson Grain Company , has been transformed into a sleek, modern venue that blends industrial history with top-tier design. The space maintains its raw, warehouse aesthetic, as it pays homage to old-school rave culture with towering pillars to evoke the underground scene, significantly similar to those in Europe. SILO’s 40-foot ceilings and elegant, open layout provide an awe-inspiring sense of space, amplified by its tech-forward design.  SILO Dallas made its grand entrance this weekend with sold-out performances from EDM heavyweights Tiësto and Deorro , alongside resident DJs Roy Montez and Chris Schambacher . The high-energy sets, combined with SILO’s immersive tech and vibrant atmosphere, got the crowd jumping and celebrating. Attendees were buzzing with excitement over SILO’s size and chic, industrial vibe, with one fan exclaiming, “We’ve needed a venue like this in Dallas for so long!”  All weekend, the sold-out crowds admired the spacious layout, while the smooth entry process, despite lines wrapping around the building, impressed many. Despite being packed to capacity, SILO delivered a surprisingly comfortable experience, thanks to its well-balanced temperature and top-notch AC ventilation. Overall, fans fully embraced the warehouse feel and modern tech, reinforcing the sense that SILO is becoming a new favorite in the Texas EDM scene.  Sound, Lights, Production & Layout This weekend, SILO Dallas put its 100,000-watt sound system and intriguing screen displays to the test and delivered a stimulating experience for attendees. The music’s clarity and intensity created a miraculous audio experience, as the robust system filled the space and kept the crowd dancing all night. The dazzling screen displays and lighting setup by Dream Beam Lasers transformed SILO into a mesmerizing spectacle—colorful visuals synchronized with the music, creating a visually stunning environment encompassing the crowd. This unique atmosphere creates a captivating backdrop that appeals to seasoned ravers and newcomers alike.  SILO Dallas Operations Even during sold-out shows, SILO’s entry process proved impressively efficient. Although lines wrapped around the building, attendees praised the swift handling by staff, who kept things running smoothly. The overall efficiency of the entry ensured that fans spent less time waiting and more time enjoying the inside atmosphere. SILO’s well-placed bars edging the stage kept the drinks flowing smoothly, even as lines grew longer. Attendees were impressed by the bartenders’ efficiency, who ensured no one had to wait too long for their beverages. SILO Dallas made a strong impression with its clean, spacious bathrooms featuring plentiful stalls and mirrors. Attendees were pleasantly surprised by the lack of bathroom lines, even during peak times - a rare perk in a packed venue. Born in Israel and now making waves in Dallas, this involved DJ and producer has a magnetic presence that’s hard to ignore. We discussed SKVLEZ’s early journey mastering the saxophone, ultimately navigating him into the EDM world. He also shared insights into his deep connection to the Dallas EDM community and how his cultural roots have shaped his music.  EDM Texas: You were born in Israel before moving to Dallas! How did your cultural background and early experiences in Israel shape your musical tastes and influence your journey into the music world? SKVLEZ: I love blending my culture into my sound, so coming from Israel and that part of the world has influenced my music and art quite a bit. EDM Texas: Your musical journey began with the saxophone in middle school! How did learning the saxophone influence your approach to music production, and what lessons from that time do you still apply today? SKVLEZ: Learning a complex instrument like the saxophone gave me a great foundation for basic music theory and taught me a lot about music in general. I want to incorporate the saxophone and other live instruments and vocalists into my production and even my live sets soon! EDM Texas: Your first encounters with live music were through rap and hip-hop shows, which eventually paved the way for your discovery of EDM! Can you share how those early experiences shaped your musical journey and what about EDM captivated you and inspired you to dive deeper into the genre? SKVLEZ: Those early experiences immersed me in live music and the local community. They helped me become more extroverted and social, leading to connections with great friends and associates within the scene. Over time, I began finding artists I resonated with and continued to discover even more along the way. EDM Texas: How did you go about finding your distinct style, and what does it mean for you to create magic in your music? SKVLEZ: Creating magic within my music means a lot of things! It means creating and combining sounds and ideas that have never been done before and making something people feel. My style has developed over time to factors like what I was raised on listening to, what I listen to now, my culture, and my lifestyle! EDM Texas: You’ve had the opportunity to support some incredible artists in the bass music scene like Mersiv, Jessica Audiffred, HEKLER, and more! Which artists or moments helped shape your growth the most? SKVLEZ: Supporting Of The Trees in Dallas was a major highlight that fueled my inspiration. Opening for Hamdi was another incredibly inspiring experience, bringing everything full circle for me.   EDM Texas: In what ways have you connected with the local Dallas or broader Texas EDM community? Are there any events or groups you’re involved in that highlight your commitment to supporting and growing the scene? SKVLEZ : I’m deeply connected to the Dallas EDM community and always seeking ways to contribute and elevate it. I collaborate closely with local groups and companies, not just by playing shows but also by organizing and hosting events. EDM Texas: Can you elaborate on Sound Culture Entertainment’s involvement in nurturing emerging artists and local talent within the Texas electronic music scene? Joseph: As producers and DJs, we have wanted to provide a platform for local artists to better themselves as artists and human beings. Over time, we have connected with these people across the state at events such as Nova Fest or the shows we’ve attended in countless cities. Some of these artists are well known and others just haven’t had their shot so artists of all sizes get that opportunity to play with their idols with us at Sound Culture! EDM Texas:  How has Sound Culture Entertainment contributed to the electronic music community in Midland/Odessa over the past few years and what impact have your efforts had on the local scene? Joseph: The co-owner of Sound Culture Entertainment, Patrick Vasquez, and I have been hosting local EDM shows for nearly four years in the Midland/ Odessa area connecting with dozens of local artists and creatives to establish the community in our area. I have worked with other companies in the region like Outer Limits Entertainment to bring headliners such as PhaseOne, VNSSA, Steve Aoki, RIOT, and more to our area so that people don’t have to drive five hours to Dallas or El Paso to see their favorite artists. Together we have taken our collective experiences and the best aspect of what we have seen from everyone else and started Sound Culture to further the growth in our area! EDM Texas: Bringing headliners to smaller markets is a unique approach! How has Sound Culture Entertainment attracted headlining acts to smaller markets like Midland/Odessa, and what benefits does this strategy offer artists and attendees in reducing travel time? Joseph: Headliners in a secondary market are rare, but we have found success networking with people nationwide. We have established relationships with several agencies including some of the largest in the business, and continue to expand and grow each day with new partnerships and relationships. We make sure they know how passionate we are about our community and the growth of something larger than all of us. EDM Texas: As Sound Culture Entertainment looks to expand into larger markets like Dallas, what are your plans for growth and how do you envision your presence influencing the electronic music scene in these bigger cities? Joseph: We want to be known as a company that throws shows for the people and by the people no matter the area. We aren’t looking to replace anyone or compete, but to collaborate and develop these areas as EDM continues to grow and evolve! EDM Texas: Can you elaborate on Sound Culture Entertainment’s vision for developing the experimental bass and tech house scenes in both new and existing markets, and what strategies do you plan to implement to promote these genres within the Texas electronic music community? Joseph: We are very open to expanding all genres of EDM, but the main in the Midland/Odessa scene is the deep/heavy dub and tech house. Being immersed in the scene ourselves, we get to hear and see what people like firsthand and would like to capitalize on that. As we grow the foundation of our scene here, the rest follows, making room for all genres to enjoy! We plan to keep ourselves grounded and stay in touch with the people in the communities to hear their feedback and be able to target our events towards things that everyone likes and not just what we prefer ourselves! EDM Texas: What final thoughts would you like to share with the electronic music community and your supporters about the future of Sound Culture Entertainment and its impact on the music scene? Joseph: Given the growth we’ve already experienced through building relationships with other promoters like Full Grind Entertainment and PRIME Night Cult, we aim to be a catalyst for the expansion of electronic dance music in West Texas and throughout the entire state and nationwide. I am extremely grateful for the electronic genre as a whole and our main mission is to leave music a better place than we found it. Music has changed our lives for the better so we owe it to music to give it our all and leave a legacy that far exceeds what we can imagine. Etherabass is emerging as a rising light in the Texas electronic dance music cosmos, as she melds ethereal landscapes with thunderous basslines to carve her unique signature sound. With a proficient hand at weaving dark undertones into high-energy mixes, she enchants audiences with a spellbinding fusion of musical atmospheres. Her passion for original production adds an extra layer of authenticity to her sets as she infuses each performance with individuality and innovation. We got to speak with Etherabass about how she navigates the darker side of DJing and delves into the depths of heavy bass. She also shares her thoughts on her performance style and how she incorporates her original production into her sets. EDM Texas: Your music is often praised for its ability to create ethereal sounds that transport listeners to otherworldly realms! What is your approach to crafting these sounds and how do you achieve such a captivating effect in your tracks? Etherabass: As a kid, I loved listening to EDM and the beautiful soundscapes in the music. It was my favorite thing in the entire world to stay up late with my headphones blasting online radio dance sets while watching the night sky. Some of my favorite artists are very underground, some are one-hit producers in electronic music. My inspiration spans all over within different subgenres of electronic music, starting with some 2000s Tiësto, Gigi D'Agostino, Headhunterz, then Flux Pavillion, Emalkay, to more current dubstep such as Subtronics, Liquid Stranger, Virtual Riot, and many others. I started teaching myself in my early teens how to use a DAW then later picked it back up as an artist. Everything I love across the assortment of artists and DJs has given a broad musical influence to the tracks I make. EDM Texas: Can you walk us through the process of working with frequencies and how you use them to evoke such immersive experiences for your audience? Etherabass: I love incorporating soaring to spacey-sounding synths and recordings taken from nature into my music. My songs often take a life of their own during creation. Whether it's an emotion or concept, I let myself get fully immersed in the creative process. When I'm working on a track, I'll let it flow and see where it takes me. If I'm getting lost in the music, I always look forward to giving that same experience to the listeners. It's like an escape from everyday reality into an entirely different one. I strive to create an experience where listeners feel transported into the miniature worlds existing within each song. This aspiration plays a significant role in inspiring my journey as a producer. EDM Texas: Are there any specific tracks or mixes where you feel your ability to create these ethereal atmospheres shines through the most? Etherabass: “Waves Of The Soul” is one of the tracks that I went into creating with a big atmosphere. I wanted to portray emotion and a story in sound. Having haunting vocals and deep wubs in one track gives a "traveling to a lost civilization deep under the sea" vibe. Right now, I'm currently working on an album that will be focused primarily on experimental dubstep with lots of transcendental, ethereal vibes. I've taken parts of my sets in that direction but usually, I like to switch it up depending on the night. I'm always evolving my sound! Can you discuss the impact you aim to achieve with these bass-heavy tracks on the dancefloor and in the listener experience? Etherabass: As a fan of many bass-heavy artists and a producer of two years, I've begun to work specifically on deeper low-end bass in my tracks to push the limits. On the technical end, it's challenging to see how low I can drop the heaviest, deepest bass frequencies uniquely, and then bring it out to watch the reactions live. I admit there's nothing like the joy of unleashing a terrifying drop that engulfs any everyday noises in its path without mercy. I've been working with Sonofinity in DFW to showcase their sound system's capabilities with my bass music. The listening and dancefloor experience that's provided has been incredible. Plus they've overall good people and a huge support to the bass music scene. We’re close to seeing a revival of genuine community birthed from the bass music scene. I'm very grateful to be a part of that! EDM Texas: When you’re performing, what specific instances do you feel the bass takes center stage and drives the energy forward and what makes these moments stand out to you? Etherabass: When not just event goers but even other DJs get their bass face on, when there's headbanging, dancing, and even people closing their eyes to feel the music... that's what does it for me. Seeing people let go and get feral with the drops while I'm behind the decks is the best feeling. I played a small festival last year and freestyled a hardstyle set so heavy it rattled the sign off the stage. The weather was also pretty crazy mid-Texas summer with lightning and all. It only added to the intensity and made for an awesome set. It's moments like all of the above when there's THAT energy, it's raw but pure simultaneously. It's a beautiful thing! EDM Texas: Your DJ sets often lean towards darker sounds creating an intense and captivating mood! What draws you to these darker elements and how do you believe they contribute to the overall atmosphere of your sets? Etherabass: One of my most unforgettable experiences was attending an underground rave in Florida. It was an unlisted event created by the community and lasted until the next day. Dancing the night away helped me forget everything that was going on in my life. The music played was dark, atmospheric, trippy, and otherworldly. It was so immersive that it inspired me to get into producing and DJing. Unfortunately, the location no longer exists in the same way, but I want to bring the PLUR vibes of that night to Texas. I would be thrilled if I could recreate even half of that epic experience in the rave scene here. I am a huge fan of dubstep, hardstyle, industrial music, and metal. I want to incorporate the intensity and darker, supernatural, or fantasy concepts into my sets. It's like telling a story through sound and creating a unique environment. I want to provide a space vastly different from our daily lives, where people can dance or headbang to forget whatever they're going through. My aim is not just to DJ an awesome set but to truly immerse people in the music, which serves as a form of healing the mind, body, and soul. EDM Texas: How do you approach maintaining this balance in your music selection and how do you see your darker sets connecting with your audience? Etherabass: Typically it depends on where I'm playing, watching the other DJs before me, and seeing how the night goes. I'll have a playlist for my sets longer than necessary in case a track has been played a lot before I'm up. It's also in case of anything not reading, or last-minute decisions on the vibe. There have been occasions when I’ve been prepared for a high-energy performance, only to observe that the audience appears fatigued. I adjust by incorporating trippy dubstep or hard dance tracks to maintain a balanced vibe. I would rather be over-prepared before performing than not. It can make the difference between doing an insane set or train wrecking hard. As for the darker sets, I love doing those and watching people thrash. Out of the sets I've played that usually get the floor more lively - it's the heaviest ones. Well... except when it's been about four to five hours in and every DJ is going as hard as the next. At that point you know everybody's vibing until their necks and feet can go some more! Those times are just as awesome though because you genuinely see people connecting with their kind of music, their tribe... making friends, and building community. That's as important as getting them to move on the dancefloor. EDM Texas: On a profound level, your music is known for its emotional depth and ability to connect with listeners! How do you utilize melodic dubstep as a genre to convey emotion and establish that connection with your audience? Somber: First off, thank you! that is a huge compliment for me because music, to me, is extremely emotional and allows for me to express my thoughts and feelings way better than words ever could. Melodic Dubstep will enable people to resonate with the music personally while still feeling that intense drop or super impactful chorus you can belt with your friends. EDM Texas: Your style of melodic dubstep stands out for its distinctiveness. Can you highlight the key elements or techniques you incorporate into your music that set your style apart? Somber: What helps me stand out is the lyrical aspects of chosen songs. When listening to music, I need that message in the song and the little story that plays out in my head while I’m listening to it. Being able to bring that imagery to others is something I crave with my music. EDM Texas: Your music is also distinguished by its fusion of metal & rock elements! What inspired you to blend these genres, and how do you believe this fusion contributes to your unique identity as a DJ? Somber: Rock and Metal is what I grew up on. As long as I can remember, I would listen to Mötley Crüe and Metallica with my dad. As I got older, I grew into the Emo scene more with bands like Motionless in White and Bring Me The Horizon. The impact their music made on me is something I want to continue to let influence me in my style and performances. EDM Texas: Can you share some insights into the challenges when merging these diverse musical styles and what rewards you find in pushing genre boundaries within electronic music? Somber: These two genres blend well but it depends on the crowd you're playing to mostly. Some people want to hear those heavy dubstep drops with the raging guitar in the background while the more melodic side might lend itself more to the pop side of music. Finding that song everyone resonates with makes me feel like I'm playing the music I love. The biggest challenge I run into is finding the right audience to allow my style to connect with, but when I do, the passion behind it for me and the crowd is worlds apart from any other style. The biggest reward I get is hearing those compliments from people saying that I made their night or they were having a bad day and I turned it around for them. It sticks with me and humbles me every single time. EDM Texas: You’ve recently performed at prominent venues around Dallas like Shot Topic, Green Elephant, and Select Start! What are some notable moments or highlights that stood out during these shows? Somber: Shot Topic is an absolute blast to play at and is, by far, my favorite gig. It allows me to keep in touch with those metal and emo roots I grew up with while still letting me sneak in some heavy dubstep with rock and seeing people go crazy over a remix of their favorite song they grew up with. My favorite moment from Select Start was the first gig - I was asked to play where I put on my mask for the first time, seeing people's faces and feeling like a completely different persona made me feel untouchable. One moment that sticks out to me was at Green Elephant for my first paid gig ever and I closed the night out and had an amazing time connecting with the audience. When it was done I was approached by a couple who said I inspired them to get into DJing and had them crying and raging with me while I played. Even as a new DJ, moments like that are all I could ever ask for and is the reason I got into this in the first place. EDM Texas: What inspires you during the creative process and how do you translate those inspirations into your music? Somber: During the creative process, what inspires me most is the songs I can put on when feeling a certain way throughout my day. Sad? I know just the song. Mad? Let's rage and get the anger out. Wherever my head is during that process is what I want people to feel when they hear me play. Emotion is absolutely the main driving factor in my creative process. EDM Texas: What are some of the motivations and inspirations behind the sets you create and how do you channel these influences into your performances to create a memorable experience for your audience? Somber: The biggest motivator for me when it comes to my sets is making sure that people feel something while I'm playing. EDM can get a bad rap sometimes where people think it's just the same beats over and over again but when I play I try to ensure that everyone in the crowd from the front to the back gets something out of watching me perform. My biggest inspirations are Excision, Seven Lions, Subtronics, Kai Wachi, and Sullivan King because they all have a huge dedicated fan base and the pure energy and emotion that they bring to their sets is something that I am constantly chasing in my own. I remember seeing Excision for the first time when I was 21 and raging the entire night and feeling like my body was hit by a truck by the end of it and I wouldn't have it any other way. They all make me feel something. EDM Texas: How do you envision your music evolving and what steps do you plan to take to continue growing and pushing boundaries within the electronic dance music scene? Somber: I want to get better at producing music; it's daunting because of the sheer amount of work and knowledge that goes into it, but I know it will pay off in the end. Collaborating with some of the bands I listened to when I was growing up would be an absolute dream of mine and bring their names to the EDM scene and show people more music they can fall in love with. Exploring more genres could help me stand out and grow in the music scene. I've been getting more into Drum and Bass and Melodic Techno because there's a lot of raw emotion from those styles but it still gives me that connection I crave with people. On a personal note, I'd love to come up with visual experiences similar to Black Tiger Sex Machine for myself, take people on a journey during their time with, me, and help them connect with the mask and Somber as a whole.
