- Music, Science, Madness: An Introduction to the Texas Eclipse Festival
The last Eclipse Festival was held seven years ago in Oregon, in the ideal location along the path of totality. In 2024, the place for ideal viewing of the eclipse is Burnet, right in the heart of Texas, north of San Antonio and west of Austin among the central plains. The Oregon Eclipse was hailed as one of the best American music festivals of all time, and now the international coalition of 13 event organizers are back to do it again. Can they create the same magic with the Texas Eclipse Festival? Among the 13 are the Berlin-based art and event collective Bachstelzen; Cosmic Convergence, a transformational festival organization in Guatemala and Austria; Earth Frequency, a festival out of Australia, and many more. Our Texas overlord, Disco Donnie is hosting this coalition, and we can expect much more than just a music festival with all the collaborators bringing in different experiences. With Austin quickly becoming a tech hub, the festival will showcase new developments in tech and digital spaces. From the NASA center in Houston to the new SpaceX locations outside of Waco, Texas has deep roots in the space world, and provides opportunities to learn about the industry's history and what lies ahead. Seven astronauts will be in attendance, along with NASA engineers, AI Professors, leaders in sustainable design, and much more. In the consciousness, health, and wellness section, the great Paul Stamets and Dr. Pamela Kryskow from the Psychedelic Association of Canada will be giving a talk. Immersive art installations will also bind the festival grounds together, with different vibes and worlds created by artists. Wandering through a festival is a major part of the experience, as it creates opportunities for conversation and moments of wonder and amusement. Among the visual and interactive artists are Alex and Allyson Grey, the visionary psychedelic artists, and Android Jones, the celebrated digital artist behind the visuals of artists like Shpongle, Tipper, and more. He is beyond just a VJ and is a leader in multimedia psychedelic art today doing projection mapping installations at festivals like Burning Man, Lightning in a Bottle, and many more. Among the EDM community he is as much a headliner of the festival as LSDream and Zeds Dead. Texas Eclipse Festival Stages The Lone Star stage is dominated by funky groovy jam bands and electro-instrumentalists, like the incredible String Cheese Incident, who I have seen many times at their annual residency at the festival Electric Forest. They and groups like Oteil and Friends will be fully instrumental, and have, in my experience, brought a tremendous and different energy to typically electronically dominated music festivals. On the other end of this stage's spectrum we have acts like Big Gigantic and The Floozies who have a much more electronically influenced sound, with CDJs, MIDI boards, and laptops right alongside drum kits, guitars and horns. Make sure to catch this stage at least once a day and see if the funk isn't a fresh breath of air. The Eclipse stage sets the Bass genre in its rightful place among the top billing. With bass subgenres like freeform and liquid among the most popular in Texas, a stage hosting the likes of Liquid Stranger, Subtronics, and Of The Trees, will be the largest musical draw for the locals. One of the undisputed highlights of this stage is Barclay Crenshaw, the true name and new project of the legendary dance music producer, Claude VonStroke. Under the new project, Crenshaw has been exploring bass, dub, jungle, funk, and hip-hop. With the ability of a veteran DJ and producer, this is an unmissable set. The Sky stage hosts the main collection of house, techno, and dance artists. One of the oldest and most popular sections of electronic music, icons like Paul Oakenfold and psytrance pioneer Goa Gil are two of the anchors of the stage. Desert Hearts and Bob Moses are among some festival favorites of the newer generation that will be drawing the dance crowd in. The Sun is our psychedelic stage for the festival. Top Psychedelic and Trance artist, Captain Hook out of Israel brings experimentation with analog equipment and live elements into his production, while the Russian born Perfect Stranger (also out of Israel) with a techno-influenced psytrance sound. Psytrance is much more popular in Latin America and Europe than in the United States, so this stage will show some love to the trance community here, and allow the rest of us to explore the genre in a live setting. The Moon stage is a mix of eclectic bass genres like the lineup brought by the label Deep Dark and Dangerous out of San Francisco, electronic instrumentalists like Josh Teed, and the Australian party starters, Mood Swing & Chevy Bass. Deep Dark and Dangerous is one of the best young record labels around with an impressive stable of bass artists. They are bringing Truth (their founder), Abstrakt Sonance, Khiva, and one more yet to be revealed. Ivy Lab and potions on this stage round out some of the best of the underground bass hosted by this stage. all:Lo Collective out of Denver will be there with their blend of hip-hop and sound system cultures that they use to create downtempo bass and lofi hip-hop. This is the stage of surprises, with the most genre-eclectic lineup of the festival. Drop by the Moon stage at any time and you might find your new obsession. The Earth stage appears to have the most instrumentalists not in the Jam Band category that most typically accompanies electronic music festivals. Acts like Fanna-Fi-Allah, who have brought Sufi Qawwali music to the global stage, has two sets. There is also the solo instrumentalist Kr3ture out of southern California producing melodic bass, and Plxmtrees, the chill hop/lofi side project of the electronic artist K+Lab. Elephant Heart is interesting, a collaboration between Jason, acclaimed producer/instrumentalist, and Victoria, a powerful singer and songwriter. I love seeing dance music with live vocals and instruments so they are right up my alley. There's even Atash, a Austin-based superband with elements of Jazz, Arabic, Classical, and boasting a global lineup of musicians. Another Austin-based act here is Vincent Antone, who I had the chance to see in Austin recently and plans to bring the high-energy funk. Four days and four nights of some of the best and most cutting edge music in the world, as well as the immersive arts, tech and science exhibitions, means you'll have any experience you choose. Race around from stage to stage catching every set on your list or wander through the grounds soaking in the experiences. Spend the day going deep with tech or space before going deep in the crowd with a DJ you've never heard of. Start your morning off with yoga and guided meditation then attend a lecture on psychedelics in medicine. Its the ultimate pick your adventure, or let your feet carry you to whatever the festival picks for you. This festival is unmissable, so make sure to get your tickets and camping passes all squared away as soon as possible. The bigger your group the better! Or keep it small and tight, all options are available in the campgrounds! You can look at your options here. See you there!
- From Texas To The Grammys: The Raddix Experience
Based in the vibrant city of Austin, Texas, Raddix is a dynamic force in the music scene. As both a skilled producer and vocalist, he navigates a wide-ranging musical landscape and showcases proficiency in an array of genres. From the infectious beats of pop to the rhythmic flows of hip-hop and even dubstep, house, and melodic bass, his artist palette shows no mercy! We had a lovely conversation with Raddix himself as we explored his captivating musical talent, versatility, and innovation that continues to capture audiences across multiple genres. Grammy’s Achievement EDM Texas: Your induction into the Grammys/Recording Academy last year is remarkable! Raddix: Thank you! I found a cool niche in the electronic music scene by not fully embracing one particular style but rather mixing and matching various genres. I’ve connected with people in the hip-hop, rap, R&B, pop, and alternative music communities. Fortunately, that has allowed me to build a network that allows me to collaborate across these genres. A couple of years ago, I encountered some prominent Texas rap artists. I noticed their management’s involvement with the Grammys, which intrigued me. I wanted to be a part of it, as I felt that the electronic music community lacked representation in such prestigious circles. I believe that the genre needs more representation, and I wanted to be a voice for the electronic music community within that space. Challenges & Milestones EDM Texas: What were some challenges, milestones, or things you have learned that led to this achievement? Raddix: Summing it all up is challenging! I’ve been making music for about twelve years, but my entry into the industry, so to speak happened around seven years ago. From what I’ve learned, it’s about finding the right key players to form a team and bring a dream to life. In the electronic music world, opinions are mixed; people are 50/50. Some prefer instrumental tracks or minimal voices, while others love singing along to lyrical songs. I feel more involved as a listener when I can sing along at concerts while also combining it with headbanging and other expressions. The diversity in preferences is interesting and adds to the richness of the electronic music experiences. Global Collaborations EDM Texas: Your collaborations with superstar performers around the globe are impressive! Can you share some insights on how these collaborations came about and what you’ve gained from working with such diverse artists? Raddix: Many of these collaborations usually happen because we share a love for the same kind of music or randomly stumble upon each other while immersed in music-related activities! It’s fascinating how encounters with big artists can lead to discovering shared fandom or admiration for each other’s work. For instance, in the past year, I collaborated with Jason Leech who’s a musician gaining significant popularity in the US. He is known for playing the keyboard and even stacking multiple keyboards on top of each other! Our commonality was our shared status as live performers. In the electronic music world, showcasing additional elements to live performances is captivating for both listeners and artists. Another example is Dorrough from Dallas! He was quite popular in 2008-2009 as he has created amazing work. These chance encounters and shared interests form the basis for many of the collaborations that enrich the music scene. Energetic Live Performances EDM Texas: You’ve also had the opportunity to perform at numerous notable festivals, including Lost Lands, Dancefestopia, Foam Wonderland, and so many more! How do you approach each festival, and what do you believe sets your live performances apart in the minds of the audience? Raddix: During live performances, I aim to take the listeners on a complete emotional roller coaster, tailored to the venue but often following a general energy flow. For example, I may kick off with an intense start and blend melodic elements with heavier beats. Then, transition into progressive house, future bass, and maybe even some bass house. Towards the end, I will finish off with a bang and create a journey where people go from going hard at the beginning to experiencing a range of emotions and finally letting loose in a party atmosphere. I embrace the role of frontman and draw inspiration from the iconic moments of rock stars like Freddie Mercury with his fists in the air and commanding presence! I aim to bring that rock show energy to our electronic music performances and create a sense of excitement for the audience. While I am the frontman, I also have a tour DJ who collaborates with me. Managing vocals, being behind the decks, and being on the stage simultaneously can be challenging, so having a dedicated DJ works well. Sometimes, we even introduce additional elements like the electric guitar, a drummer, or collaborators joining us on stage for a truly dynamic and engaging live experience. Raddix On Adapting to Audiences EDM Texas: Your talent has graced a diverse range of events and festivals! How do you adapt your performance style to suit different types of audiences and events? Raddix: I’ve positioned myself in a great spot where I blend various genres and provide flexibility in my performances. Whether it’s house music for a house crowd or heavy dubstep for a dubstep show, I have it all and everything in between. There have been instances when I performed in a new city and sensed that the crowd was not vibing with a particular genre. In such cases, I quickly adapted. Once, I even asked the crowd directly, hopping on the mic, and asked “What do y’all want to hear?” They’re like, “We want house music!” and I effortlessly switched it up. The crowd vibed out and it was a great atmosphere! EDM Texas: Is there anything else you would like to let our audience know? Raddix: My debut album AFTER DARK was just released a month ago! This album is a mixture of all my favorite sounds that have inspired me over the years. This album includes all original vocals and production alongside my sound engineer, Adrian Rich. We have compiled songs with rock, blues rap, R&B, and electronic music influences creating a one of a kind and truly unique album listening experience. It is now out and available here. Raddix stands as a powerful symbol and illustrates that dreams can be achieved through unwavering self-belief. His journey, marked by an induction into the Grammys and a diverse range of collaborations shows that possibilities unfold when one follows their passion with dedication. We are thrilled to have shared Raddix’s inspiring story and encourage you to follow his socials below: Facebook Instagram Twitter Spotify

- From Bayous to Breakdowns: Buckten's Bass Journey
Rooted in the pursuit of crafting delicate yet raw bass music, BuckTen aims to immerse his audience in an audible journey like no other. His musical odyssey has traveled from the heart of Louisiana to the vibrant landscape of Austin, Texas, marking a significant chapter and bringing forth a new phase in his artistic endeavors. We had a lovely chat with Buckten about the essence of his mission, while we also explored the intricate balance between his delicacy and raw power that defines his unique musical landscape. BuckTen’s Musical Journey from Louisiana to Texas EDM Texas: Can you take us back to your beginnings in Lake Charles, LA, and share how your early experiences shaped the artist you are today? BuckTen: I’m originally from Lake Charles, but I’ve moved a lot in my lifetime, so I would say it all began in Mandeville, LA! During my senior year of high school, my buddy introduced me to DJing using a tractor S2 controller, and he would always bring it over to my garage. With just one speaker, he taught me how to mix on it, exploring genres like deep dub and artists like J.Phelps, 50 Carrot, and more. Eventually, I became proficient at DJing and after a while, I started to think about how to elevate it to the next level. Initially, it was pretty intimidating since I lacked any musical background. From there, I got a piano and started learning to play simple melodies as well as my favorite songs. That was the big hurdle - making music when I had no clue what I was doing! EDM Texas: What were the musical influences or moments that sparked your passion for creating bass music? BuckTen: I saw Liquid Stranger live and it was a significant experience for me, along with attending various festivals. His genre of music is what kept me moving in that direction. I used to listen to a lot of melodic bass artists that immersively drew me in and I appreciate both the pretty melodic and heavier stuff, which is where I find a lot of my inspiration. EDM Texas: Your journey in the electronic music scene has seen you grace stages at notable events like ZOOLU, Independence Festival, and Buku Music & Art Project in Louisiana! How have these performances contributed to your growth as an artist, and are there any particular performances that stand out as a stepping stone in your musical career? BuckTen: I believe the Buku & Music Art Project was the most significant for me, as it was a capstone moment in my career. It marked my inaugural major music festival performance, and it turned out to be with my best friend, Don Peyote. He’s not just a close friend but also the one who initiated me into production and guided and aided in crafting my initial songs. I appreciate that he recognized and liked my music and I’d like to express my gratitude because it has significantly benefitted me! EDM Texas: You recently made the move from Louisiana to Austin, Texas! How’s the city treating you so far? BuckTen: Over two years ago, I was living in Sulfur, LA where there isn’t that much to do, especially when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. With limited friends and motivation, making music felt challenging. The isolation was tough and except for Don, I only had a few friends. Moving to Austin was a significant leap and establishing a new life and friend group here was a journey. The growth from there to here, however, is remarkable because, despite the initial “new kid” factor, the opportunities in Austin are vast. In my experience, there is a collaborative spirit, and people are eager to work together and uplift each other. This is precisely what I sought by moving here - finding a like-minded crew with shared goals. EDM Texas: How has the location change influenced your creative process and the evolution of your sound? BuckTen: Touching grass every now and then is refreshing! I used to live in the middle of nowhere, with limited options for entertainment and inspiration. Austin changed that for me. The city offers so much to explore, with numerous friends and collaborators. Hanging out with talented peers has enhanced my skills, with many teaching me valuable lessons. I’ve ventured into new musical territories since living here, inspired by outings where I encounter new music or unique scenes. There’s more to explore in Austin, providing ample inspiration! BuckTen And His Genre-Defying Productions EDM Texas: Your musical portfolio showcases a remarkable diversity, ranging from drum and bass to serene, melodic dubstep! Can you walk us through your creative process when approaching different genres? BuckTen: My approach varies depending on the project. There isn’t a single method I stick to when making music. For instance, if I create a heavy dubstep song, the next track might lean towards something melodic, soft, or even drum and bass. I constantly avoid repeating the same style to keep my production diverse. When developing my own sound, I resist staying confined to a specific genre. Interestingly, I’ve received advice from more established artists suggesting that creating the same song repeatedly is the key to making it big. However, that approach doesn’t align with my preferences. I enjoy being diverse - my sets cover a wide range. The unpredictability, not knowing when comes next, adds to the fun and is something I find crucial in my creative process. EDM Texas: How do you approach each new release to ensure it pushes the boundaries of your production skills? BuckTen: My secret sauce involves mixing and mastering. While I can get my songs about 95 percent there, the final touch to achieve that industry-standard sound comes from my mixing and mastering engineer Sean Tessier. He’s highly influential in sound design, and sitting in the same room, and watching him transform my songs from a B+ to an A+ grade is truly enlightening. Working together, we identify subtle mistakes that might go unnoticed during repeated listens. Having an external perspective is crucial to combat ear fatigue, which can obscure things you might miss. This, for me, is the essence of my process. Additionally, my friend group plays a significant role, as we share projects and each member contributes their unique talents. For example, I may not excel in writing melodies, but my friend Sean does, leading to the creation of impactful songs. Another friend of mine, Lucas is a pro at production speed, as he sends me ideas that I can readily hop onto. It’s a collaborative effort where each friend inspires the other. Without them, I wouldn’t have produced half the music I have now. Memorable Experiences EDM Texas: Your recent performance at Freaky Deaky 2023 has garnered a lot of attention! Were there any standout moments or interactions that you found particularly memorable, and how did this performance contribute to your connection with the Austin electronic music scene? BuckTen: I’d say the most memorable moments for me while performing were those instances when I could look up and connect with the crowd. Being on the decks, I had to consciously remind myself to glance at the audience. It’s easy to get absorbed in adjusting knobs and changing settings, and sometimes that set flies by so quickly that you forget to look up! However, when I did take those moments to look up, seeing my friends, both old and new, along with managers and fans who supported me, was truly heartwarming, and I’ll admit it, a bit emotional! I felt incredibly thankful for the strong friend group and support system surrounding me. Another standout memory from the festival itself was the unexpected backstage access! My friend and I positioned ourselves right behind the stage during Of The Trees’ performance, soaking in the experience of hearing our favorite songs played live. It was undeniably a beautiful moment! EDM Texas: You’ve also recently showcased your talent at the Half-Baked Block Party organized by Neon Native, as events like these often bring different atmospheres! Can you share insights into your performance and how it allowed you to express your creativity in a unique way compared to most events? BuckTen: Lake Charles doesn’t have a big electronic music scene as it is more inclined towards country music and hip-hop. My friend, Colton Snyder, runs Neon Native and organizes electronic music events down there. While Neon Native primarily focuses on hip-hop events, Colton always includes me in the lineup. This support is significant, as he was my first when I returned to Lake Charles. Although I typically play a mix of hip-hop and other genres, adapting to the crowd’s preferences makes it more enjoyable. As an artist, staying true to your style is crucial, but catering to the audience enhances the experience. It was fun playing different music styles that I don’t typically include in my sets, adding a unique and enjoyable element to the performance. EDM Texas: Looking ahead, what can your fans and the music community anticipate from you shortly? BuckTen: I’ve been working extensively on my music, collaborating with my graphic designer, Alex Ferrero. He played a pivotal role in my graphic design during my rebranding a few years ago for my first EP. Currently, we’re focused on creating teaser videos finalizing the mix, and mastering various projects. My goal is to release at least one song every four weeks, and I hope to release my entire collection soon. Additionally, there are numerous collaborations with friends and a plethora of remixes in the pipeline! As BuckTen continues to evolve and explore new horizons, we invite y’all to stay tuned for his upcoming releases and performances by following his pages below. The Austin electronic music scene is set to resonate with the energy and creativity that Buckten brings to the forefront! Facebook Instagram Spotify

The Tale Behind Flow Faire At the heart of Flow Faire’s one-of-a-kind blend of medieval aesthetics and electronic melodies lies the inspiration drawn from Middlelands, an unforgettable 2017 festival held at the Texas Renaissance Fairgrounds. This event became the grounding where their core leaders not only attended but also forged connections that evolved into lasting friendships, sparking the genesis of a truly unique experience. “Middlelands wasn’t just a festival; it was a transformative journey for each of us, deeply impacting our lives,” The Royal Court says. “Motivated by our experiences at Middlelands, we aspired to play a more active role in our local EDM community. This led us to participate in more local events and even host our own after-hours house parties. It was during these gatherings that our core team solidified, evolving into a family-like unit.” Charting a creative course in 2019, their trajectory shifted when they crafted a stage for the Flow Through Summer festival. Recognizing their prowess, the festival organizers extended an invitation for continued collaboration. Eager to innovate, the team embraced the opportunity but not without suggesting transformative adjustments - a tweak in timing and a reimagined name. And so, in 2019, the creation of Flow Faire marked a bold evolution in their festival journey. “Our initial plan was to launch the first Flow Faire in 2020, but the unforeseen challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic led to its cancellation,” The Royal Court explains. “Despite this setback, we’ve remained dedicated to the vision of Flow Faire. This year marks our fifth year of planning, and we’re thrilled to present the fourth edition of Flow Faire, a testament to our journey and passion.” Flow Faire is a tapestry of crafted experiences, designed to elevate anticipation and exhilerate spirits. Year after year, the team embarks on a creative odyssey, surpassing their benchmarks with each edition. Whether that be unveiling unexpected art installations, introducing immersive games, or inspiring participants to fashion themselves in uniquely expressive costumes, their mission is to forge an environment that captivates with enchantment and thrives on the beauty of unpredictability. “This commitment to novelty and mystery ensures that Flow Faire is a unique journey, not just for the attendees, but for us as organizers,” The Royal Court says. “We strive to maintain a balance between familiar traditions and new, exciting elements, ensuring that the anticipation for Flow Faire remains a vibrant and integral part of our community’s experience. We push ourselves each year to bring something new to the table all the while staying true to our roots that helped us find our path to creating our festival as well as helping us find the community we love and call our family. Now that we can see the amazing impact that Flow Faire and DFW Rave Fam have had on the community as a whole, it feels like we should make everything as special for others as it once was for us because I know we all look back on that beautiful festival and can see how much it changed all of our lives!” Don’t miss your chance to be part of the enchanting adventure that is Flow Faire. With The Concourse Project as our canvas, the festival will hold its extraordinary experience on March 9-10th, 2024. Beyond the beats and melodies, Illfest is a dynamic tapestry, a canvas upon which the unique energy of Texas dance music is painted. As we eagerly count down to this year’s run, the excitement extends beyond the music - an exceptional festival experience awaits, resonating with the artistic soul of every attendee. Lineup Spotlight This year, Illfest proudly boasts a stellar lineup that transcends boundaries, promising an unparalleled journey. Headlining this year’s adventure includes the mesmerizing Rezz, known for her dark bass and techno sound; the explosive trio, Black Tiger Sex Machine, with their signature sound of heavy bass and electro; and the melodically gifted b2b set, Dab the Sky (Dabin and Said the Sky), whose emotive dubstep resonates with deep emotions. Elevating the experience further, Dr. Fresch will also take the stage with a House Records Takeover, adding a dynamic layer to the festival’s landscape. The lineup also unfolds an array of talent, including Champagne Drip, Valentino Khan, Virtual Riot, and more notable artists, ensuring an unforgettable experience for all attendees. The Artistic Expression Behind Illfest Illfest was originally a festival called “Illectric River” and was started by Jason Millsap and Robert Brooks. PRIME came onto Illfest in its 3rd year when it rebranded as part of a natural synergy between them and the founding members. “A lot of this was because we formed the Mark My Words partnership with owner, Robert Brooks, so getting involved with Illfest was a natural progression,” PRIME says. “Illfest and festival projects for us are a challenge that we personally love to tackle. They are filled with problems to be solved and for us are tests of what it means to curate and share.” Additionally, the recent partnership with Disco Donnie this year has been generating a lot of buzz! As Donnie has been a long-time partner with Mark My Words, it was a natural discussion to work together with Donnie on Illfest, as they have always maintained that the best approach to a successful and healthy music market is collaboration. “We have always tried to create and share what we collectively enjoy and want to celebrate with our community,” PRIME says. “I think the most important thing for us is sharing art that we believe and hope we are able to contribute to the growth of new ideas, art, and experiences.” Every year, Illfest continues to feature diverse lineups of music and visual artists, unique production, great eats, installations, and of course, amazing sound. The art and installation portion of Illfest is really the festival's other half. “Street art is something that has inspired all of the festival contributors,” PRIME says. “It’s something that brings us together and we feel that it’s an important shared moment for the festival guests. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be involved in projects like Illfest and work with the talented people that really bring this all together!” We invite you to mark your calendars for an immersive journey into the heart of electronic music and artistic expression. We had a conversation as we delved into the Detroit influence that molds his music, his journey in leaving a mark on the electronic music scene, and his recent transition from Michigan to Houston. As we explore his musical journey, it’s evident that his passion, creativity, and dedication shine brightly, promising an exciting future in the Texas electronic dance world. WYNAX’s Musical Journey EDM Texas: Your music is deeply influenced by the city of Detroit! How has growing up in the iconic industrial city shaped your musical journey and the unique blend of industrial elements and energy that define your sound? WYNAX: Growing up in the Detroit metro area was a blast, as there is so much industry within the Detroit area. I looked around one day and asked myself, “How am I going to stand out in this scene?” and I looked all around me. As my dad has worked in the auto industry my entire life, I took inspiration from him and his occupation. I have become obsessed with adding little hints of industrial elements throughout my music in the last few years. I love to layer my snares with steel clanks or a hammer to add the feel. I also love the vibe of dark industrial factories and how that affects my music. I want my music to make you feel like you are in the city of Detroit, driving through factories and embracing what Detroit is. EDM Texas: Could you tell us about a memorable moment or experience in your career where you felt like you truly made a mark on the Detroit electronic music scene? WYNAX: This year, I played the Shrek Rave at the Majestic Theatre, which is one of the most prolific theaters in the city. This theater opened in 1915 and so many legendary acts have played there. To be a part of that and play on such a historic stage really made me feel like a part of the history. EDM Texas: You recently made the move from Detroit to Houston! How has this transition influenced your music and connection to the electronic music scene? Are there any notable differences in the music culture between these two cities that have impacted your work? WYNAX: Ever since making the move to Texas, I have noticed a different feel to my music. Michigan has a huge bass scene up there, with the likes of Peekaboo, Griz, and G-Rex. It feels like my music used to be heavily influenced by those acts as many people around me listened to them. Ever since I moved down to Texas, it feels like my music has become more mature. I am feeling more consistent with my music and less scattered. My music has reached a point where I am appealing to all different cultures rather than just Michigan fans. The Unique Appeal of WYNAX EDM Texas: How would you best describe ‘energetic house music’ and what sets it apart from other styles of electronic music? WYNAX: I like to pride myself on bringing a new perspective to music in the house scene. I believe that there are many acts in the house scene where their music feels a little slow and not so hard-hitting. Nothing is wrong with that but when I hear that it feels like I want more energy. When I make my tracks, I try to bring as much energy to them as I can. There needs to be someone who brings something more to house music than just typical house. House music needs an infusion of something beyond the typical. EDM Texas: Can you share some examples of how you challenge yourself in your music, and what drives you to push the boundaries of the genre while still resonating with fellow DJs and fans? WYNAX: One way I like to challenge myself is by listening to modern music and thinking about how it can be more unique. I want the house music industry to have someone that starts pushing against the walls. I like to take elements from bass and mid-tempo to create something unique. I believe people appreciate my music for its unique and unprecedented qualities. I also believe people like my music because I am very present on social media and my personality shows. My social media combined with my music reminds people that I am not just another boring DJ but someone to resonate with. EDM Texas: Your social media presence is as unique as your music! How do you approach creating content and engaging with your audience on platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and beyond? WYNAX: Creating content is something I do for fun rather than as a job. Many DJs these days treat content creation as a job and see it as their sole path to success. I think posting content is great but only if it is genuine. There are many people faking and it looks like they are struggling to record themselves. I enjoy creating content for my own enjoyment. I love to make TikToks, especially ones that people can easily engage with. Same with Twitter, I love to make posts that create a conversation rather than me ranting into the abyss of that website. EDM Texas: How do you see your own personality reflected in your music, and how does this personal touch resonate with your fans and fellow artists in the electronic music community? WYNAX: I’ve always pursued freedom throughout my life. Freedom can be achieved by gaining the power to do so. However, it’s those who take risks and challenge boundaries who truly attain this power. I believe that is how my music feels. I want to feel free within my music and the only way I can do that is by not closing in my walls of specific genres but rather setting myself free with music. It’s clear that WYNAX’s Detroit-inspired, innovative approach toward his music has sparked interest both in Michigan and Houston. As he continues to push boundaries and stay true to his free-spirited nature, keep an eye on this talented producer as he makes waves in the Texas electronic dance community! - Wubz and Wonders: The Karmuh Experience
Lauren Villarreal, known in the electronic music world as Karmuh, is a versatile producer and DJ hailing from Dallas, Texas. Karmuh’s meteoric rise began with her debut track “Help Me”, featuring Madnoiz, which swiftly made waves and earned her recognition among the Texas electronic music community. Her distinctive musical style artfully fuses elements of experimental bass and new-age hip-hop, creating a sonic landscape that is both mesmerizing and innovative. In our exclusive interview, we had the privilege of diving into the Karmuh experience and exploring her profound impact on the dynamic Texas dance scene! The Artist Behind Karmuh EDM Texas: Your journey in the electronic music scene has been both fascinating and inspiring! Can you take us back to your early days and share what initially drew you to electronic music? Karmuh: I've been a dancer my whole life. I have been in competition cheer and dance since I was a young girl. I was introduced to the scene by a high school friend who showed me Borgore and I fell in love with the music instantly. With my skills in dancing and my love for music as a whole, it didn't take long for me to pick up go-go dancing gigs. From there on out, I knew I was meant to be involved in this beautiful industry one way or the other. EDM Texas: How has your connection to electronic music influenced your creative journey and what keeps you inspired with this dynamic musical landscape? Karmuh: Electronic music has connected with me spiritually. It has gotten me through the highs and lows of life, and for that I am grateful. I've been inspired by the consistent evolution of the electronic music scene and I love seeing bigger-tier artists using their platform to make a positive impact. I'd love to use my project as a way to spread love and light through each and every individual who has the chance to indulge in the Karmuh experience. The Karmuh Experience EDM Texas: What elements and emotions do you aim to convey to your audience, and how do you go about creating that unforgettable Karmuhe experience? Karmuh: Dancing has always been a big part of my life. That's definitely one element I'd like to add to my sets in a more uniform fashion down the road. You'll catch me behind the decks every once in a while doing my thing. I'm a performer. I like to share my emotions through the music I'm playing or releasing. I like my audience to go on my journey with me, but ultimately I'd like to convey a sense of euphoria, fulfillment, and bliss. If I can make someone else's life just a little bit better through my music then I feel like I've succeeded. EDM Texas: How do you utilize low-end frequencies to create a distinct mood or vibe in your tracks and sets? Karmuh: For me, personally, low-end frequencies are the new wave. There's something about the manipulation of bass that really does something for my spirit. I feel like this newer age of experimental music is more for the dancers and less for the headbangers. Don't get me wrong if you want to headbang, you're more than welcome to, but I feel like making music you can feel in your body over just hearing in your ears definitely plays a role in the vibe of my sets. EDM Texas: How do you strike a balance between experimentation and familiarity to craft a style that’s both innovative and accessible to your audience? Karmuh: I've said it since I first started DJing, I want to make "hot girl" electronic music. I like to incorporate vocals from musicians that I enjoy and also artists from my childhood. I feel like my taste in music is pretty universal considering I enjoy all genres which in turn, resonates with my fans. EDM Texas: Your music is known for its “wubby hard hitters” that really resonate with your audience. What makes these wubby hard hitters such a critical part of your musical identity and how do they contribute to the overall experience of your music and sets? Karmuh: It's not a Karmuh set without a wubby hard hitter or two! Every time a song drops I immediately make a gnarly bass face and use my fingers to imitate the sounds. It's almost as if the music becomes a part of me and if I can make somebody else make those same faces and movements, then I feel accomplished! On top of the wubz I've also begun to incorporate sounds that give almost a magical fairy vibe. I've always considered myself a weird person, so it's just natural my sets follow in the same direction. Karmuh’s Impact on the Texas EDM Scene EDM Texas: You’ve been an integral part of the EDM scene in Dallas. Can you share with us how your presence and music have influenced and contributed to the local EDM community? Are there any specific collaborations you’ve been involved in that have had a notable impact on the growth and vibrancy of the Dallas EDM scene? Karmuh: Outside of the Karmuh project, I am a co-founder of iSkream Collective, which is a promotion company here out of DFW. My involvement with the company is what kick-started my project in the first place. Being able to showcase other artists and building a platform to chase their dreams has actually influenced me to chase my own. It also opened doors to meeting other groups of genuine individuals. Working with teams like Full Grind Entertainment, DFW Rave Fam, Baked Up, #TilTheDirt, and 1220 Ent to not only play but to curate shows, has been very humbling for me. I personally feel like it's brought together a lot of different demographics of people who may have never crossed paths. It honestly makes me very happy. EDM Texas: How do these connections impact your music and career and what do you value most about your involvement in this vibrant community? Karmuh: Without the people I have met today, I honestly don't even know if the Karmuh project would even exist today. The support I receive alone is enough to make anyone want to pursue their dreams. It's honestly what drives me. What I value most is the beautiful energy when we're all together. I feel so whole when I'm surrounded by all the love, music, and laughter. EDM Texas: Is there anything else you want the community to know? Karmuh: If I could end on any note it would be that if you have a dream, chase it. You're not "too old" to do whatever it is that inspires you. You are here for a reason. Be that reason and be that light. Blessed be. <3 Karmuh’s journey in the electronic music scene reflects her deep passion and connection to music and dance. Her message of pursuing dreams, regardless of age, resonates with all, and her music invites you to be a part of the Karmuh experience, where music becomes a transformative and unforgettable adventure. - JFRANK: Crafting Melodic Bass Magic In Texas
JFRANK, a rising star in the vibrant Texas EDM scene, is a prominent figure in the melodic bass genre. With his latest track, “Cyber Chase” along with his other releases, he is creating ripples across the electronic music landscape. If you’re looking to explore the world through the lens of this passionate and innovative artist, join us as we delve into the creative process behind this remarkable song, influences, and journey as a whole. The Rise of JFRANK EDM Texas: Can you take us back to the beginning of your musical journey? How did you first discover your passion for electronic dance music, and what inspired you to pursue a career as a producer? JFRANK: It started back in the summer of 2011. I was at an Allen High School game when one of my friends showed me “Still Gettin’ It” by Foreign Beggars and Skrillex. It was one of the most insane things I had ever heard in my life at the time. After that I searched through the internet to find out that kind of music was called “dubstep”. Fast forward to April of 2012 - I was neck deep in the EDM rabbit holes on YouTube, and that’s when I found out about the music festivals. I was watching Hardwell’s set when I realized he’s able to make his own music, play it out in front of thousands of people, and make a living off of it. Once I realized that, the rest was history. I knew exactly what I wanted to dedicate my life to. I think my passion for it originally stemmed from needing another kind of music when I was younger. I grew up listening to my parents listening to a lot of R&B and hip-hop, and my older brother listening strictly to hard rap. I was just tired of listening to love/breakup songs and tracks about violence and getting money. Dance music finally gave me that sense of escape and a positive feeling towards it. I was in love as soon as I heard about it! EDM Texas: It’s clear that your music has a distinctive and captivating style! Could you share some of the artists or experiences that have significantly influenced your sound? And how do you feel your style sets you apart in the world of EDM? JFRANK: If I could narrow it down to the top three artists that influence my music, it would be Hardwell, Virtual Riot, and Ace Aura. I’ve said it before, but I give so much credit to Hardwell for showing that there is a future for me within this business. It is possible to start from nothing and work your way to the top of the mountain. I credit Virtual Riot for showing how diverse your creativity can be. Lastly, I gave a lot of credit to Ace. When I was first starting to produce, there were always the super heavy dubstep/tear-out guys like Excision, and there were also guys who leaned a lot more toward melodic dubstep like Seven Lions. Those guys are amazing, but I wanted to make music that was somewhere in the middle of those two worlds. In the midst of that, I came across Ace’s tracks, and Immediately thought “Oh wow he’s doing exactly that!”. I was really excited to see that someone was making music in the way I was thinking about it, but it also challenged me to step my own game up and differentiate my sound from his. EDM Texas: Can you tell us about some of your proudest accomplishments in your career so far? Additionally, can you share some insights into your previous releases and how they have shaped your artistic revolution? JFRANK: The proudest accomplishment of my career would probably be playing Ubbi Dubbi and Lights All Night in the same year. I was in California when I was offered a closing set at Lights All Night. At that point, I wasn’t really posting that much on social media at all. I was really grinding away on the music, so it was an amazing moment to know that the Disco Donnie team enjoyed my set at Ubbi Dubbi enough that they invited me back for Lights All Night. My previous releases have made me grow and level up each time and I can feel myself getting better and better with each release. More times than not, I will be making new stuff and some of my friends will recommend trying a sound design method, which in turn, inspires me even more to try new things and different ways to make new sounds. With every new track, I always try to keep one new thing I did within that track as a part of my box of tools I use regularly to make music. "Cyber Chase" Unveiled EDM Texas: Could you walk us through the inspiration behind “Cyber Chase”, its unique elements, and the creative process that brought it to life? What do you hope listeners will take away from this musical journey? JFRANK: The inspiration behind “Cyber Chase” was more of me realizing that my melodies don’t always have to be so complicated all the time. There are a lot of great songs that have very simplistic melodies and chords. It was a song that I could really relax on being super sophisticated and intricate, but more so just make something fun and energetic! The primary message I hope listeners take away from the track is this. The fact that it IS a journey, and it should be enjoyed as such. It’s an adventure, and it is never about getting to the destination. EDM Texas: Could you share some insights into the production techniques and musical choices that contributed to the track’s distinctive melodic bass sound? What sets this aspect of the song apart from other bass tracks? JFRANK: My main thought process when it comes to making melodic bass music is to get a 50/50 blend of both heavy bass and melodic content. So when I sound design I start with something that could be a regular bass sound on its own, then add the color to it. To my producers, Snap Heap by Kilohearts has been super helpful with this process. It's never really about adding the melodic side 50% on absolutely everything. A lot of times there are some sections in my music where the heavier basses takeover, but balance it out with a heavy melodic section soon after, and vice versa. I think the fact that I do the whole “50/50 blend” method is what makes my tracks stand out in general. A lot of the major dubstep bangers and classics lean very heavily one way or the other. They’re either very heavy with little melodic content or the other way around. EDM Texas: The title “Cyber Chase” suggests an intriguing theme. Could you shed some light on the inspiration behind the name and the overall theme of the track? Are there any specific experiences or ideas that influenced this creative direction? JFRANK: “Cyber Chase” is one of my favorite themes and ideas. The artwork shows some sort of digital wormhole into the white unknown. The whole idea is that when the drop hits it forces your imagination to run wild with what is on the other side of that wormhole. The drop gives your brain somewhat of an idea of what happening once you cross through, but for the most part, it is entirely your choice to envision what is transpiring. Can you share some insights into how you’ve contributed to the local community? Have there been any memorable collaborations, performances, or events that stand out as a significant contribution to the scene? JFRANK: The Texas EDM scene is really special to me considering that’s where I got my start. But in general, it has been and always will be my home. I’ve moved away from Texas a couple of times now, and anywhere I go, I make sure people know where I came from and how we live down in the South. I actually played shows in multiple states where most of my set consisted of Dallas or Texas producers in general. I've always wanted to put Dallas more on the map than it currently is and my last two collaborations with PRSM and Malware are easily my favorite. My set at Lights All Night stands out to me as well. I had to close out a stage on day two of the festival, playing at the same time as John Summit and Zeds Dead. They are two of the biggest dance music artists today, and I had to figure out a way to keep a crowd and keep their attention. I was able to pull it off and I was very proud of what I was able to accomplish that night. EDM Texas: As “Cyber Chase” gains momentum, how have you experienced its reception, particularly with the Texas EDM community? How do you feel your music resonates with the local audience, and what role does your background play in your artistic identity? JFRANK: I have had an overwhelming amount of support for this track within the community and it always amazes me just how supportive the community can be! It’s only been out a week and I’ve seen it on so many playlists, it's breached the top 30 dubstep streamed tracks on Hypeddit and all the messages I’ve received about it. I think the music I make has a unique connection with the community. There have been times when I played a 9 p.m. set, which in most cases most people aren’t at the venue yet, and out of nowhere, the place is packed out! It blows me away every time it happens and I try to live in those moments and not take it for granted. I think my background does play a key role in my artistic identity. If it wasn’t for my time at Allen High School, being a part of the band, moving to the Midwest and experiencing that for a few years, and going to California for Icon Collective, I would not be where I am at all. I wouldn’t be who I am either. It all blends together and comes out as yours truly! JFRANK’s remarkable journey and unique melodic style have made him a prominent figure in the EDM world.
